I don’t feel bad leaving music for sick son — Stella Monye

Veteran singer, Stella Monye, was off the music scene for many years to take care of her sick son but she is back and she says she has no regret leaving the scene to tend to her offspring.

Monye, who just released a new song titled ‘He Prepared Me’, maintained that her son was more important to her than her career. Speaking in an interview with Saturday Beats, she said, “I have no regret doing what I did. My son will always be more important than anything. Even though we are still on the journey of trying to get it right, as he is in a critical condition. However, I need to work to be able to pay his bills and take care of myself.”

Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, she said, “The title of the song is ‘He Prepared Me’, and it was written by a friend, who based it on the turbulence I went through. It was basically inspired by the experience I had during those turbulent times.”

On why she had to return to the industry at this time, the singer said, “My son had an accident while I was on a national engagement with other Nigerian artistes. That tragic incident stopped me from working, because I had to take him to numerous hospitals.
“However, at this stage, I might never be able to see him through his predicament if I don’t go back to work. The systematic medical procedure laid down  for him in the United States of America is to go on concurrently until he is given a clean bill of health, and that is not a joke financially. He is still on danger list as we speak.”

Asked if she was confident she could assert her brand amidst the array of talents currently making waves in the industry, she said, “I am not in competition with the old or new generation of artistes. Like wine that gets better with age, I am bringing my wealth of experience to bear. I have gone mundane lyrics and will only put out edifying content.

“As a matter of fact, I would like to work with a host of the young artistes out there, such as Bnxn (formerly Buju), Asake, Olamide and Davido.”
On the toll her son’s ill health has taken on her over the years, Monye said, “It has taken a huge toll on me. I suffered a heart attack, and I have other health conditions as well. I am currently dealing with diabetes and high blood pressure.”
